Nationals candidate for Bullwinkel, Mia Davies, has celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD), joining a panel discussion and breakfast at Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) to encourage others to look for opportunities to advance and support women in our communities.
Ms Davies said the theme, March Forward for ALL Women and Girls was a universal message to continue to strive for equity for women and to celebrate those who are already making significant strides in their fields.
“Women provide valuable insights and essential representation, yet they continue to face barriers in many areas of society,” she said.
Ms Davies shared her experiences as a woman in politics, starting in 2008 as the only woman out of ten Members representing the Agricultural Region in State Parliament, to becoming the first female Leader of The Nationals WA, and WA’s first female Minister for Sport and Recreation.
“Sport has long been recognised as a powerful tool for breaking down gender barriers and fostering inclusivity,” Ms Davies said.
“By encouraging female participation in sports at all levels, we can promote physical and mental wellbeing, build confidence, and challenge stereotypes.”
Mia emphasised the importance of female representation and the impact of local infrastructure and grassroots initiatives.
“My priority has always been to fight for the needs of local communities by securing funding to support the programs and infrastructure that make a difference,” she said.
“It’s why I am fighting for upgrades to community infrastructure in the electorate of Bullwinkel.
“Whether it’s upgrades to the changerooms at Elsie Austin Pavillion in Mount Helena, or a new home for the Glen Forrest Cricket Club so the three-time Premiers in the women’s team can continue to excel, I know these projects make a real diffference.”
Ms Davies said International Women’s Day was both a celebration and a reminder of the need for persistence, consistency, and ongoing efforts to advance and support women in all facets of life.
“There are still inroads to be made whether it’s in business, community, sport or education, and I’ll always be an advocate for positive change,” she said.
