Telecommunications boost for Perth Hills

The Perth Hills are set to benefit from a $1.2 million commitment by the Liberal-National Coalition for ten portable diesel-powered generators on trailers to provide backup power to Telstra towers during emergencies.

The Nationals candidate for Bullwinkel Mia Davies said the lack of reliable telecommunications had been a key issue raised by Hills communities.

“Over the last six months I have heard loud and clear the frustration and anxiety from Perth Hills residents who live with patchy and unreliable telecommunications every day,” Ms Davies said.

“This announcement is part of our commitment to improving telecommunications – specifically in times of emergency.”

She said the Labor Government had failed to listen and deliver on improvements for the region, leaving blackspots and blackouts as a regular part of life for Perth Hills residents.

“Our commitment today proves that we listen and understand the Perth Hills and are prepared to invest to keep people safe during an emergency,” Ms Davies said.

“Our bushfire and emergency brigades rely on mobile phone communications to alert volunteers and to stay connected during the emergency.

“The community needs connectivity to stay informed and safe, it’s as simple as that.”

Ms Davies said that the Perth Hills area was plagued by numerous telecommunications blackspots due to its challenging topography and dense tree canopies.

“The announcement today is a step toward better telecommunications for the Perth Hills and I won’t stop fighting until there’s a solution for the patchy coverage residents and visitors experience everyday.”

Leader of the Nationals, the Hon. David Littleproud MP, said access to essential services like power and telecommunications is critical, particularly in areas vulnerable to natural disasters.

“This investment ensures the Perth Hills community is better prepared and able to respond in times of crisis,” Mr Littleproud said.

“And, unlike the Labor Government, we have committed to deliver a dedicated, purpose-built Incident Control Centre (ICC) for the Perth Hills area to help coordinate and respond to fires and other emergency incidents,” he said.
